Everything Everything ArcManchester four-piece Everything Everything return with their much-awaited follow-up to 2010’s ‘Man Alive’ in the shape of ‘_Arc_’ (pun intended). As you might expect, they’re as mental as ever. It’s difficult to pin down Everything Everything in terms of sound or genre as they jump all over the place. One minute they can be a pop act, and the next they’re experimenting with bee-bop jazz. Everything Everything are the very definition of eclectic.

First out is the single ‘Cough Cough’ with twitchy stop-start drumming and who knows what they’re singing about. Its rhythm and harmonies are infectious from the start and despite its utter madness, it is difficult not to sing along, even after only a couple of listens. Continue reading

Cold Pumas – Persistent Malaise

Released – 05/11/2012 (Faux Discx, Gringo Records & Italian Beach Babes)

Cold Pumas - Persisten MalaiseBrighton-based Cold Pumas have been around for a while and have recently released their debut long-player, ‘Persistent Malaise’. Their sound is rooted in dirty guitars, looped riffs, inaudible vocals, and all of it aching with cool. It’s difficult to listen to this record without making some very big comparisons with the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain and just about any of the bands associated with the early ‘90s Shoegazing scene. There are many similarities to be made, but Cold Pumas have managed to create a sound all of their own. In keeping with the bands who clearly inspired them, they take themselves very seriously, and they personify the type of lazy cool you don’t often find these days. Continue reading

Sleepies – Weird Wild World

Release date – 21/08/2012 (Godmode/16oh)

Sleepies Weird Wild WorldA lot of the records I’ve liked so far this year have been pitched as ‘punk’ but I’ve found them to have more in common with some of the more experimental/noise, dare I say, grunge bands of the late eighties/early nineties. They owe a lot to the likes of Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Iggy Pop and, in some cases, My Bloody Valentine. Most of the time I’m left wondering if I like these bands because I’ve suddenly been turned on to punk, or because they remind me of the ethos and invention of my favourite acts. Case in point here are The Men understudies, Sleepies, with their second full length album ‘Weird Wild World’. I say understudies because both of their records have been produced by The Men’s Ben Greenburg, and their sound takes on a similar ‘pile driver’ sound to it. Sleepies are similarly shape-shifting in their musical approach too. Continue reading

Royal HeadacheAussie four piece Royal Headache actually released this, their debut album, in September of last year on R.I.P records.  After huge praise in Australia the album was then picked up by ‘What’s Your Rupture’ Records for worldwide release.

The band all go by nicknames: Shorty (drums); Law (guitar); Joe (bass); and Shogun (vocals). As the story goes, the bassist’s roommate owns R.I.P Records, and also runs a recording studio in Melbourne. The band made the 12 hour road trip from Sydney to Melbourne to record these twelve tracks. They then spent a couple of months perfecting the vocals and production. Since its release on both sides of the world, it’s become almost a viral success.

Japandroids – Live

Upstairs at The Garage – 29/05/2012

Japandroids Live Upstairs at The GarageJapandroids played the final gig of the UK tour Upstairs at The Garage, and what a gig it was. In support of the impending release of their second album ‘Celebration Rock’, to say the band, and the crowd were up for it would be an understatement.

Japandroids hail from Vancouver and comprise Brian King on vocal/guitar and David Prowse on vocal/drums. As a two piece there is a lot of work to be done to make the noise they do. Both are hugely talented and inventive musicians, and their first album, 2009’s ‘Post-Nothing’ is testament to this.
